 INVITATION

It is a pleasure and privilege for us to invite you to attend the Seventh Asian Apicultural Association Conference to be held in the Philippines on 23-27 February 2004.

The conference theme is gBees for New Asiah.  The conference hopes to discuss and resolve issues in bee management, bring forth new technologies and updates on bee biology, bee pests and diseases, bees and the environment,  and other subjects of interest to the apiculture community, and enhance professional apiculture evaluation.  This falls under the general objective of further enhancing the growth and development of bee science and beekeeping in the years to come, within the context of an Asian Region that is poised to play the leading role in the global community of the 21st century.  Even as the first conference in Thailand ushered in a new era in bee science in Asia, the tremendous strides that have made since then should make this one a milestone, a coming of age, as it were, of both Asian apiculture and the Asian Apicultural Association.

This international conference will bring together researchers, scientists, project managers, extension specialists, developmental workers and entrepreneurs sharing common interest in bees at different perspectives.

 Date: 23-27 February, 2004

Venue: University of the Philippines, Los Baños

The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is located in a suburban town which is 53  km away from the international airport in Manila. It is nestled at the foot of Mt. Makiling, the site of well-preserved forest that is home to a large proportion of the countryfs richly diverse plant and animal life (including bees).  Blessed with a mild climate, UPLB,  the leading agricultural university of the Philippines, is located in the town of Los Baños, which also plays host to the  International Rice Research Institute, and various national and international agencies - a science city, tourist spot and garden town visited from afar. This ideal home for bees (as well as people) is also located along the shores of Laguna de Bay, the largest inland body of water in the Philippines. In addition to being home for the national coordinating center for beekeeping research and extension, UPLB should also be of great interest to apiculturists because it is easily accessible to large, organized commercial farms utilizing both indigenous and introduced bee species – a concrete example of the success of joint efforts by the academe, beekeepers and government. All of this, in a venue just next door to the capital and airport.
