February 25, 2023 : Events

Several eminent scholars in the fields of Applied Linguistics and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) gave presentations at the 4th & 5th ELF SIG International Workshop hosted by Waseda University in February, 2023.

Among them, Professor Masaki Oda (Executive Director for Higher Education at Tamagawa University) shared insights on the development of applied linguistics in relation to the impact of the Center for English as a Lingua Franca (CELF) at Tamagawa University. Professor Oda is both Founding Director of CELF and current President of the Japan Association of College English Teachers. He commented on issues associated with English as a widely shared linguistic resource which is shaped by its users from different linguacultural backgrounds.

Other presenters from Tamagawa University included Professor Ayako Suzuki (Associate Director, CELF; jointly appointed with the Department of English Language Education) and Professor Paul McBride (Director, CELF), who provided an overview of ELF and pedagogy at CELF. They explained that CELF is celebrating the tenth anniversary of the launch of Tamagawa University’s ELF program in 2023, while simultaneously introducing a new program of study.

Associate Professor Blagoja Dimoski spoke on behalf of his research group colleagues about their government-funded Kakenhi project which investigates communication strategy use and associated pedagogical implications. Visiting scholars showed great interest in the research, which includes the development of the ELFJ Corpus, a collection of transcriptions of Japanese users of English communicating with people of diverse linguistic backgrounds.

The international workshop was a welcome opportunity to exchange ideas which contribute to the development of teaching and learning materials for students at Tamagawa University.
