The 22nd Workshop on Microbial Resources

gHow can the revision of International Code of Botanical Nomenclature affect applied fields of mycology? --- Whether it would give innovative solutions to integrate teleomorph and anamorph or cause total chaos: extinction of well-known species such as Aspergillus oryzaeh

@

The workshop on Microbial Resources has a 10-year history in Tamagawa University and very well received so far.  More than 70 people mainly from industry always attend the workshop.  The forthcoming workshop will be co-organized by the Mycological Society of Japan.

There has been a big discussion on Article 59 of ICBN and Amsterdam Declaration to abandon dual nomenclature.  It is a big issue in Japan as well.  The The name of famous fungus, Aspergillus oryzae could disappear!  Applied microbiologists generally do not understand why taxonomy and nomenclature have been changed so often.  This is not good for both applied people and taxonomists.

In the meantime, the session of the Nomenclature Section was held from 18 to 22 July during International Botanical Congress in Melbourne.  According to the advance announcement, a big revision was concluded:

@

1.        The new title is the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN)

2.        The Code will allow for the electronic publication of names of new taxa

3.        The requirement for a Latin validating diagnosis or description was changed to allow either English or Latin

4.        The Code adopted the principle of gone fungus one nameh:  Article 59 has now been deleted from the Code.  Both morphs have priority

5.        Registration of fungal names via MycoBank is now required

6.        The revision will be valid as of January 2012

These are really big changes and it is essential for applied mycologists as well as taxonomists to understand this.  We are thus going to organize a workshop on this topic before IUMS.  If you are interested in the workshop, why don't you actively participate in this workshop?
