Hello from Canada(生物環境システム学科を目指す学生さんへ)

We your future teachers at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, wish to extend our warmest greetings and wish to tell you a little about what it will be like during your time in Canada.

The City of Nanaimo
Nanaimo is located on the east side of Vancouver Island. It has a population of around 86,000 people. The city is well served by a mild climate and beautiful scenery.
The city has plenty of shopping and recreation facilities which can be found on the north-end of the city and the University District respectively. Transportation throughout Nanaimo is via buses which forms the public transit system (http://www.transitbc.com/regions/nan/).
Nanaimo is close to two major population centres. Vancouver is about 2 hours away by bus and ferry while Victoria is about 1.5 hour drive from Nanaimo. There are main recreational opportunities available in Nanaimo and surroundings (http://www.hellobc.com/en-CA/RegionsCities/VancouverIsland.htm).

The Locations for the Classes
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is where you will attend ESL classes. There are approximately one thousand international students on campus and a total student population of about 18,000 full and part time students. The campus includes two cafeterias, and throughout the year the International Education offers many activities for students to participate including trips and sporting activities (http://www.viu.ca/).
Paine Centre and Milner garden is where your other courses will be held at the Paine facility. This is the home of the horticulture program is located on 35 acres of wood lands. On a few occasions classes will be at Milner garden (http://www.viu.ca/horticulture/grpaine.asp, http://www.viu.ca/MilnerGardens/).

Some Course Activities
Often you will be going on day trips for lectures and activities. Some highlights of the activities include: McMillan Park (visit old growth forest), Mount Washington (visit Alpine meadow), Butchart Gardens (look at plant product and display gardens), Royal Roads (look at invasive plant species), Mill Hill (visit Gary oak meadow), Errington Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (see wildlife of Vancouver Island), Wild Wood Eco-forestry ( see old growth forest and logging activities done in a sustainable way),and Goldstream Park ( see salmon spawning).
