Thinking about the use of English language around us(By Andrew Leichsenring)

2017年8月3日

I visited Japan for the first time over two decades ago. Since then, and as I am working in Japan nowadays, I have thought about the use of English all around me here. I have noticed how English is being used in a localized way. For example, I was in Kobe recently and found a ‘cash pit’. I had never seen the expression ‘cash pit’ before. However, I soon came to understand its meaning. The sign ‘cash pit’ was above a shop space entrance. Inside this space there were several ATMs and drink vending machines. I thought that ‘cash pit’ was a useful name for such a facility. I hope that you will read my thoughts here on ELF Talk and develop your own curiosity for the use of English language around you. Let’s remember that the world is an interesting place!
