環境農学科の海外留学プログラムは、農学部系の大学には珍しく必修となっており、
2年次の3-4か月の留学を含めて4年間で卒業できるカリキュラムとなっています。
カナダのバンクーバー・アイランド大学や
ニュージーランドのマッセー大学へ留学
留学期間の前半は、語学科目（英語）により、様々な国の留学生と一緒に「ナマの英語表現」を学びます。後半は、フィールドワークを多く含む専門科目において、自然環境、農林水産業や資源問題、人間の影響について学び、専門的な英語力を伸ばします。また、留学先での滞在はホームステイです。ホストファミリーとの生活と交流によって、日常的な英語表現や習慣に触れ、文化の多様性を理解し、国際性を高めます。

1970年代にカナダで始まった農学部の海外での学び
1976年、玉川学園創立50周年記念事業の柱の一つである「国際教育の振興」を推進するための最初のステップとして、カナダ・バンクーバー島に「玉川学園ナナイモ校地」が開設されました。その2年後、農学部の海外プログラムは始まりました。農学部の学生を長期派遣するようになり、最初は年1名だったのが数年後には2名となり、やがては8名ほど派遣するようになりました。
やがて、ナナイモ校地で多くの農学部の学生が学んだ実績を生かして、海外で授業を行い、単位も取得できるプログラムを作ろうという動きが学部内で広がっていきました。2003年、当時の生物資源学科生物環境情報コースのカリキュラムに、初めてマラスピナ大学（現バンクーバー・アイランド大学）で学ぶ約4か月間の海外プログラムを設けました。そして2006年には生物環境システム学科のプログラムに発展し、2023年からはニュージーランド・マッセー大学におけるプログラムも始動しました。これらの歴史が現在の環境農学科の海外留学プログラムにつながっています。
留学を通して自分の道を切り拓く力を！
私もナナイモ校地で1年間過ごした学生の一人です。私自身も学生時代に初めてカナダに到着したときはとても不安でした。今のようにインターネットがなかったので海外情報も乏しかったですし、英語力だってまったく自信がありませんでした。でもそんな不安な気持ちに打ち勝って、自分で状況を切り拓くことで人は成長できます。英語を学ぶモチベーションも高まりますし、異文化の中で過ごすことで比較文化の視点を持つことができるようにもなるでしょう。留学中の滞在はホームステイですが、ホストファミリーはもちろん、他国からの留学生とも共同生活をしますので、さまざまな国の友人を作ることもできます。
そしてこの海外プログラムで広がったグローバルな環境への視野を北海道など国内でのフィールドワークと関連づけていくこともできるようになるでしょう。
「海外プログラムに参加したいから環境農学科を選んだ」という学生も多く入学しています。私たち教員はそうした学生の期待に応えるためにも、これからもプログラムの見直しと改善を図って、実り多い4か月を過ごしてもらえるよう努力していきます。

My name is Jon Charman and I am Programme Coordinator for the Tamagawa University Short Course here at Massey University. I have the pleasure and privilege of supporting and guiding students from the College of Agriculture of Tamagawa University through the programme we have here in beautiful New Zealand. I work closely with our dedicated and experienced language instructors, who bring innovative techniques to the classroom to help you develop your communication skills in English. Your will get plenty of opportunity to practice those skills with your host families, your Massey student colleagues and within the friendly local community or Palmerston North. I also coordinate the varied and exciting activities and visits programme, where we explore local and regional agri-businesses and environmental projects, and numerous cultural and touristic activities centred around New Zealand’s amazing countryside, flora and fauna.
Kia ora everyone. My name is Chris Anderson and I am Professor in Environmental Science in the School of Agriculture and Environment and the lead academic for your programme with us here. We are very proud of the engaging and interactive academic programme for New Zealand Ecology, Plant Science, Natural Resource Management, and Regional Environmental Studies. This programme enhanced by the many field trips to interesting sites and projects, including to Massey dairy farms and sheep and beef farms, and Massey animal and horticultural research units, all the while escorted by members of my academic team from the School of Agriculture and Environment.
